It’s a long listen, but full of gems.

We Dem Boyz

So over the past few months and even weeks, there has been non-stop news coverage of anything related to police brutality and minorities, mostly black males. Being black myself, it’s hard not to have a more heightened sense about how you should conduct yourself in public in order not to be harassed by law enforcement or in extreme cases, gunned down. I do realize that there are great police officers out there, upholding their oath to protect and serve, but of course a few bad ones make it hard for the good ones to get any recognition. I choose not to say anything about the matter unless asked, face to face. I did however find myself creatively airing out my frustrations with how I felt about the matter.

BlxckAmericxThe painting above doesn’t have a name, and most likely will be painted over, but at the time, it helped me depict how I felt without having to air out my feelings on social media. I wouldn’t consider myself a Twitter/Facebook activist. I think some people don’t realize that body language says a lot to people when you speak with them face to face, and because most of our communication seems to be online, you lose some of that, and the words themselves can be translated into something hurtful, when the intention may not have been that at all.

Anyway, I also made some progress on the “no plan, no vision” mural I’ve been chipping away at. The title says everything, there’s no plan, and no vision to this. It’s really a collection of randomness at any given time.

My main focus however has been the two framed paintings below. In March, the Domestic Violence Network, here in Indianapolis, will be hosting an exhibition at the Art Space at the Athenaeum that explores the theme of domestic violence. The show is meant to create awareness of issues surrounding domestic violence.

The show will also feature select artworks from domestic violence survivors as DVN and its partners utilize art therapy as a critical tool in the healing process.

To end things on a more lighter note, I got this amazing sweatshirt:

Toronto based music trio BadBadNotGood teams up with Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan and MF Doom to present “Ray Gun”, which will be featured on the upcoming Ghostface, BadBadNotGood album, Sour Soul.

I am INCREDIBLY excited for this…especially after watching this video.

Lupe Fiasco – Deliver

I used to work at a management consulting firm that was near a “high crime area”. We were half a mile away from two different Jimmy Johns, and even during the day, neither one would deliver to our building. It’s amazing how something as simple as that can be conveyed through song and given an even deeper meaning.

I am excited for another Lupe album. It’s been too long.

There’s something in the air, and it’s making me sneeze and cough

These past couple weeks have been like nothing I’ve ever experienced. A few days before Thanksgiving I started getting a fever, was losing my appetite and coughing uncontrollably. Come to find out, I had Bronchitis, which would later turn into a sinus infection and a cold. Ugh! On top of that, I had final exam coming up, and I we had a HUGE project that needed to get finished at work, which meant I couldn’t call in sick. Commence the pity party.

I did manage to do some painting and sketching here and there

I did some character doodles and did some experimenting with using inks (above) and also worked on a painting that had been pushed to the side and re-visited an old painting (below)

And now Netflix has decided to add a lot of movies and shows that I’ve been dying to see. Thankfully finals are over and this sickness is gone…for the most part. Time to indulge.

Mondo Media: Off the Curb

Yesterday, I checked out this documentary on Netflix, called “I Know That Voice”. In essence, the documentary highlights the careers of many talented voice actors, both present and past.¬† One of the actors that was spotlighted on this documentary goes by the name of John DiMaggio. If you Google him, you will be surprised by the amount of work this guy has put in over the years. Nevertheless, the documentary showed a snippet of a character he played in this animated short. I immediately fell in love with what I saw and began my YouTube quest to find out everything I could about what this “thing” was. Turns out it’s a series of shorts called, “Off the Curb”, which is very reminiscent of the kind of conversations you hear in a barbershop.

I love everything about this. Why am I JUST now finding out about this?!

The other characters portrayed are below. All VERY talented as well.

Carlos Alazraqui – Rocko on Rocko’s Modern Life, Deputy James Garcia on Reno 911!
Cedric Yarbrough – Deputy S. Jones on Reno 911!
John Di Maggio – plays Jake on Adventure Time, Bender on Futurama
Gary Anthony Williams – Uncle Ruckus on The Boondocks
Fred Tatasciore – Saren in Mass Effect and Damon Baird in Gears of War
Eric Bauza – Fiendish Dr. Wu on Black Dynamate, Marvin the Martian on The Looney Tunes Show
